** PRIOR FIRM EXPERIENCE
The Ray and Maria Stata Center for Computer, Information and Intelligence Sciences is a 430,000-square foot academic complex plus 290,000-square foot underground garage design by Frank Gehry for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The complex is home to the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS) and the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy.
The above grade cast-in-place concrete structure consists of two 10-story towers, with a common 4-story podium. The structural system is composed of 14-inch thick two-way slabs supported on sloping columns. Lateral load resisting systems is comprised of concrete shear wall up to 16 inches thick. Individual offices and classrooms, lecture halls consist of shaped structural steel.
The subterranean structure comprises two parking levels and a high-bay truck dock and materials handling area. The structural system is composed of 12-inch thick two-way slabs supported on concrete columns. Foundation system consists of a 4-foot thick mat foundation. Shear walls from the above-grade structure continue down the mat foundation. A 30-inch thick, reinforced concrete diaphragm wall (slurry wall) was designed to provide lateral earth support during excavation and used as the permanent foundation wall system. A combined system of tiebacks anchors, corner braces, and inclined rakers were used to brace the concrete diaphragm wall during excavation.
