Saiful Bouquet provided full structural design services for the new UCI Health Science and Nursing building.
The Susan and Henry Samueli College of Integrative Health will include approximately 63,600 assignable sq. ft. of dry research, instructional, student support, as well as academic and administrative office space, including a small food service facility. The Sue and Bill Gross Nursing and Health Sciences Hall will include approximately 43,100 assignable sq. ft. of instructional space including a clinical skills lab, dry research space and academic and administrative office space.
The structure uses an innovative structural system of post-tensioned concrete framing, with Special Concrete Shear Walls resisting seismic forces in each direction. A post-tensioned concrete system supports a landscaped plaza at the second floor. Steel framing is used over the Auditorium, supporting a photovoltaic array above. The two buildings are structurally connected by bridges to allow sharing of instructional space.
