CSU Dominguez Hills’ Loker Student Union Building is located just north of the University Library at the hub of the campus. Saiful Bouquet completed the structural design services for the new 137,000 (65,700 sq. ft. renovation and 71,500 sq. ft. addition) building, which includes expanded food service options including multiple fast-food outlets, a fine dining restaurant, and sports lounge. The complex also includes a University Bookstore, Student Government Offices, and Campus Post Office. Meeting Spaces for the new facility include a ballroom capable of seating 500 for banquets and 1,000 for lectures.
The new building was framed with steel construction, using Special Concentric Braced Frames as the seismic force resisting system. The braced frames are playfully expressed in the architecture.
The project featured many sustainability best practices including utilizing natural lighting in order to reduce dependence on artificial lighting. Over 50% of the existing building’s mechanical, electrical and plumbing infrastructure was reused, and 40% of the building materials were regionally manufactured.
