Located in the heart of Torrance, the new Mary K. Giordano Regional Transit Center is poised to become the southern terminus for the Metro C-Line light rail, significantly enhancing the city’s connectivity to the greater Los Angeles region.
Saiful Bouquet provided structural engineering services for this state-of-the-art, five-acre facility, which supports eight bus routes and serves as a key transit hub for the South Bay. The center connects passengers to major regional destinations, including LAX and multiple transit systems, while offering a host of modern amenities. These include eight-level boarding platforms, passenger information kiosks, ticketing services, a security office, a transit store, public restrooms, a training facility, restaurants, and coffee shops.
One of the project’s key challenges was the design of the canopy grade beams, which required precise detailing due to a non-orthogonal column grid and potential clashes between rebar reinforcement and embeds. Saiful Bouquet’s team employed innovative detailing strategies to ensure the foundation’s integrity, resolve conflicts, and deliver a seamless design solution for this highly complex project.
