Saiful Bouquet performed structural reconfiguration design for the revitalization of the existing 760,000 SF Horton Plaza, a once iconic retail destination in downtown San Diego. The total project budget was approximately $100 million.
The new design creates strong external connections and a completely new retail experience. It opens a new entrance that engages the Gas Lamp District, and creates a compelling new retail and entertainment destination that embraces the indoor/outdoor lifestyle of San Diego. Saiful Bouquet provided complete design for all the structural modification work. All design improvements used BIM integrated with the client’s Revit Model. Structural challenges involved redeveloping the complex’s seismic expansion joints, major new additions, and a complete redevelopment of the exterior shape of the structures, as well as phasing the project to allow for continuous partial occupancy.
