The Terminal 1 expansion at San Diego International Airport is well underway, celebrating steel topping off earlier this month, and we’re proud to be part of the project! Acting as Associate Structural Engineer under Magnusson Klemencic Associates (MKA), Saiful Bouquet designed the foundation systems for the new Terminal 1, seismic design for the sequential demolition of the existing Terminal 1 structure, and structural engineering for the relocation and seismic strengthening of a historic United hangar terminal building.
Our team thrives on collaborating on challenging terminal projects like this. We applied unique structural design solutions for the structure that entailed suspending the below-grade service tunnels from concrete grade beams supported by Auger Cast Piles (ACP) to facilitate construction over highly liquefiable soil conditions below the water table. Phase 1 of the expansion is set to open by 2025. This project represents a new “gateway to the region,” and we are excited to witness the realization of this vision.
